Benefitfocus

Annual Enrollment Progress Widget

Project: Benefitfocus

Description: Benefits administrators need to track enrollment progress as their employees complete enrollments during Annual Enrollment. Annual Enrollment is a period during each year where an employer allows it’s benefit eligible employees to elect coverage for the following plan year. The benefits administrator needs to understand the status of the eligible population in real-time during the annual enrollment window to identify additional communication strategies to ensure employees enroll in their benefits on time.

Software: Figma , Photoshop, Lightroom

Design Question: How might I design a dashboard widget that provides a high-level view of this data using data visualization design techniques and removes the need to run reports?

User Research

The research tells us that benefits administrators:

  • Are primarily female, and despite being a range of ages from millennial to boomer, are not extraordinarily tech savvy

  • Want information to be straightforward and easy to find

  • Tend to expect designs to be more traditional than cutting edge

User Persona

Design Requirements

From research analysis and the user persona, 4 design requirements were identified:

  1. This mobile widget should have a countdown to the end of enrollment.

  2. Users should be able to easily filter enrollment status data by location.

  3. There should be a data visualization that shows the breakdown of enrollment status by those who haven’t started, those who are in process, and those who completed enrollment.

  4. This mobile widget should have the ability to send a message reminder to those who have yet to start enrollment.

Sketch

I sketched out some design iterations for each functionality using the information from the user persona.
